This past Monday evening, Lou Lopez Sénéchal ’22 became the first-ever ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ Women’s Basketball alumna to be selected in the WNBA draft when she was tabbed as the fifth-overall pick by the Dallas Wings. Lopez Sénéchal, the 2022 MAAC Player of the Year and the 2022 MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Player, scored 1,598 points in her four years with the Stags. She spent her graduate season at national powerhouse UConn, leading the Huskies to a Sweet 16 appearance as an AP All-America Honorable Mention.
Lopez Sénéchal cemented her legacy at ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ in her senior campaign, leading the Stags to the MAAC Championship – their first in over two decades – and an NCAA postseason appearance in 2022. She netted 604 points as a senior, the second-most ever by a Stag in a single season, averaging a conference-best 19.5 points per game. Lopez Sénéchal was the unanimous MAAC Player of the Year, becoming the third ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ student-athlete to ever garner that honor.
For her ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ career, Lopez Sénéchal ranks sixth in program history with 1,598 points, sixth in three-point field goals made (170) and second in 3-point percentage (.391).
"Lou had an incredible four-year career at ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ — packed with wins, championships, banners, and lots of points scored," ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ Head Coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis said, noting that from everything she's heard, Lopez Sénéchal remained a humble team player who made everyone around her better. "Though I never had the opportunity to coach Lou, her impact is still felt and she has left a lasting legacy here at ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ. The Stags can't wait to cheer her on at the next level!"
"It was a pleasure to coach Lou," added former Head Coach Joe Frager. "She brought exceptional talent and a drive to succeed. Lou always put our team first, tried to do whatever we asked of her and was very coachable. She was a major factor in us winning the 2022 MAAC Championship. I am just thrilled that she will be able to pursue her professional ambitions."
Lopez-Sénéchal combined to score 2,173 points in her five-year collegiate career. She totaled four all-conference nods, earning three All-MAAC First Team distinctions at ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ and collecting All-Big East First Team laurels this season at UConn.
As the fifth overall pick in the WNBA draft, Lopez Sénéchal joins a Dallas Wings squad that went 18-18 overall to finish sixth in the league last season.
Lopez Sénéchal graduated from ¹ú²úÉ«ÇéƬ in May of 2022 with a degree in marketing from the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. She will complete a second bachelor’s degree in general studies from UConn this spring.
