Richard T. De George, PhD, will analyze the ethical dimensions and challenges of capitalism.

The Patrick J. Waide Center for Applied Ethics will host a seminar on Wednesday, Nov. 20, featuring Richard T. De George, PhD. Dr. De George is University Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, of Russian and East European Studies, and of Business Administration at the University of Kansas, where he also co-directs the International Center for Ethics in Business. This virtual event will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. via .

Dr. De George is one of the foremost scholars in business ethics, computer ethics, and applied ethics. A renowned authority on capitalism and ethics, Dr. De George will address the controversial question, "Is Capitalism Morally Defensible?" Drawing on his extensive background in political and social philosophy, he will examine the ethical dimensions and challenges of capitalism. The session will be followed by an interactive Q&A.

Dr. De George holds a PhD from Yale University, and has been a research fellow at Yale, Columbia, Stanford, and the Hoover Institution. He has served as the Charles J. Dirksen Professor of Business Ethics at Santa Clara University, and as a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Business at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

In addition to delivering lectures worldwide, Dr. De George has also authored more than 200 articles and 20 books, including The Ethics of Information Technology and Business (2003); Academic Freedom and Tenure: Ethical Issues (1997); Business Ethics (2005, 6th edition); and Competing with Integrity in International Business (1993). He has held leadership positions in academic organizations such as the American Philosophical Association, the Metaphysical Society of America, the Society for Business Ethics, and the International Society for Business, Economics, and Ethics. In 1996, He received an honorary doctorate from Nijenrode University in the Netherlands, alongside Bill Gates and Nelson Mandela.

This seminar is part of the Waide Center’s ongoing efforts to advance learning and research in applied ethics and foster interdisciplinary dialogue on the ethical challenges facing society today. The Patrick J. Waide Center for Applied Ethics is housed within the Charles F.
