Douglas Brinkley to Discuss Highs and Lows of the American Presidency: Past, Present, Future, Nov. 1

Hear from acclaimed author and historian, Douglas Brinkley, as he takes historical lessons and applies them to the present and Election 2024.

Quick Center for the Arts will present renowned American historian and bestselling author Douglas Brinkley as he delivers the History Department’s annual lecture in conjuction with the Open VISIONS Forum series on Friday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. In his talk, titled “Highs and Lows of the American Presidency: Past, Present, Future,” Brinkley will explore the evolution of the American presidency, offering insights into its history and trajectory. 

Brinkley currently serves as the Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and professor of history at Rice University. He is a board member of the National Archives Foundation and the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, and is part of the James Madison Council at the Library of Congress. Additionally, he holds the title of presidential historian for CNN, and is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, bringing his historical expertise to both the public and academic spheres.

In addition to Silent Spring Revolution, Brinkley has authored several criticaly acclaimed books, including American Moonshot: John F. Kennedy and the Great Space Race, a New York Times bestseller, and Cronkite, which won the Sperber Prize. His work The Great Deluge:Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast earned him the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, and his two-volume The Nixon Tapes was honored with the Arthur S. Link Warren F Kuehl Prize,

A recipient of seven honorary doctorates and a Grammy award for Presidential Suite, Brinkley is widely recognized as one of America’s leading historians. The Chicago Tribune has praised his “America’s New Past Master,”and he was named the official U.S. Presidential Historian by the New -York Historical Society.

Brinkley’s lecture aligns with the Quick Center’s mission of fostering informed dialogue and bringing people together through engaging and thought-provoking programming. By offering a deep dive into the complexities of the American presidency, Brinkley’s talk will encourage attendees to reflect on history’s impact on current events, and inspire a deeper understanding of leadership in today’s world.
